Kirkland

Population: 19,894 (December 2000)
Area: 10,28 km2

Kirkland is a well-planned, modern residential community. Half are english-speaking. The community is growing fast, with many new condominiums and townhouses constructed each year.

There are many single-family homes in Kirkland as well. Just about all of the housing is under 20 years old. There is some industry bordering the Trans-Canada Hwy., but it is well separated from the residential areas.

The municipality is mainly residential, except for a prestige industrial park along the highway, with commercial activity concentrated on Saint-Charles Boulevard.

Kirkland is a very popular choice of younger families attracted by modern housing at reasonable prices and the quality of the urban environment. Streets are designed to restrict through traffic and the community prides itself on its network of parks, its arena, community centre and library. The municipality also operates the Kirkland Cultural Centre in a converted 200 year-old French-Canadian farmhouse which is made available to community groups for meeting and exhibitions.

The present mayor is John W. Meaney, who has been a member of the Kirkland City Council since the mid-1970s. Council members include Joe Sanalitro, Buck MacDonald, Paul Dufort, Dominic Zito, Michel Gibson, Andre Allard, John Morson and Brian Swinburne.

Kirkland is primarily a residential community, with a commercial core, and an industrial park straddling the Trans-Canada Highway (Autoroute 40). The city is comprised of mainly single-family residences, with some multi-unit facilities (apartments, town houses, and condos) available. It is a full-service community, with a public works department, recreation department, engineering department, accounting, communications, human resources and administrative services operating for the welfare of its citizens.
